Dental crowns and bridges are used to correct significant dental defects, like filling up the gap resulting from a tooth extraction, or correcting a tooth that is discoloured, cracked, or injured.
Dental crowns - sometimes also referred to as caps - are used to restore teeth that are broken, or are at high risk of breaking, due to old fillings or fractures.
Crowns are often recommended to fix teeth in the cases of extensive decay, injury, or root canal therapy. Crowns are usually made from noble alloys or porcelain and the final finish will look and feel very close to your natural teeth
If a crown is the right procedure for your dental needs, the procedure will start with taking an impression of the area that requires the crown(s). A temporary crown will be applied while the impression is sent to a dental laboratory where the final crown will be carefully constructed to fit perfectly onto your tooth. The final crown will be cemented into place and you'll enjoy a return to full oral functionality.
Bridges are fixed, or non-removable prosthesis constructed to replace one or more missing teeth. The teeth on both sides of the existing space are used to attach the bridge to restore functionality and aesthetics. Materials used for this process are noble alloys, porcelain or porcelain fused to metal. Bridges are indicated whenever at least one tooth is missing. A bridge is composed of abutments and pontics.
Abutments are the supports for the bridge, consisting of crowns placed overtop of the teeth surrounding the empty space of one or more missing teeth.
Pontics are special crowns specifically designed to fill the span of the gap where one or more natural teeth are missing.
